SoMD Lottery winner can now afford to go to college. Almost.

Hot take: you shouldn’t have to win the lottery in Maryland to go to college. One lucky 18 year old Calvert County resident claimed her $50,000 top prize from Maryland Lottery headquarters this week. The Southern Maryland Chronicle reports: “My dad plays all the time, so I started when I was 18. I’m so happy!” She plans to study Computer Science at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Her cash winnings won’t cover the full cost of tuition, but “will certainly put a dent in her bill.”

Solidarity to this young Southern Marylander who can now reduce her debt load for her continuing education. As Working Class folks know, $50,000 in college debt can carry crippling interest rates and last for years, with no guarantee of a commensurate salary or even a job after graduation. It’s an expensive gamble, one that prevents many in SoMD from attempting to play the college game. If continuing education is a public good, one possible pathway for young people to make their way in the world, then we must abolish the debt model going forward. Free public education in SoMD NOW
